6/14/2004 Project Safe Neighborhoods Launches web site to help community fight gun crime PORTLAND, Ore. – Project Safe Neighborhoods Oregon has launched a new Web site at www.PSNOregon.org that provides useful tips and information about how residents can help combat gun crime in their neighborhoods.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is a national gun violence reduction initiative that encourages federal, state and local law enforcement and community leaders to work together to reduce gun crime. In Oregon, the program specifically targets gang-related gun violence, crimes of domestic violence in which a firearm is involved, and armed career criminals - those who have three violent felony convictions, such as sex abuse, arson, assault, robbery or murder. Through community involvement, strict enforcement of firearm laws, and rigorous prosecution of offenders, Project Safe Neighborhoods is spreading the message that gun violence is not tolerated in Oregon.
“The new Web site at PSNOregon.org is another valuable tool that will help the public get involved in the effort to reduce gun crime in our neighborhoods,” said U.S. Attorney for the district of Oregon Karin Immergut. “I hope that the resources and information provided on the Web site will encourage community participation in this important initiative.”
Along with general information about the Oregon Project Safe Neighborhoods program, the new Web site provides the public and law enforcement officials with valuable information they can use to help prevent gun crimes in their communities, including:
· When and where to report illegal guns and illegal gun possession, including information on what defines an illegal firearm and who is banned from owning a gun;
· How community members can actively be involved in keeping illegal guns and gun crime out of their neighborhoods;
· Training opportunities for members of law enforcement agencies across the state about federal gun laws and other relevant law enforcement topics related to this initiative;
· Information about domestic violence in Oregon and the connection between domestic violence and guns, as well as resources for domestic violence victims.
Project Safe Neighborhood first set a record in 2002 for increasing the number of defendants federally charged with gun-related crimes by 20 percent. In 2003, the program set a new Justice Department record with nearly 23 percent more defendants charged with federal firearm-related crimes.
