Gang Member Convicted of Being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm

PORTLAND, OREGON - Today, after a four-day trial, a federal jury found 26 year-old Corey Hudson guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

During the trial, the jury heard evidence that Hudson’s possession of the firearm arose from an August 8, 2005, gang-related shooting incident in downtown Portland, where at least 50 shots were fired by five different weapons. Hudson and others fled the scene. An ensuing police car chase ended with a fellow gang member, Deandros Brown, fleeing on foot and discarding two of the firearms used in the shooting. Brown was sentenced in October, earlier this year, to 87 months imprisonment for his possession of the firearms. Fingerprint and DNA evidence linked Hudson to one of the two discarded firearms, a 9mm Ruger semi-automatic, which was fired during the shootout. Testimony identified Hudson and Brown as members of the Hoover Crips gang. Hudson had a December 2000 Oregon conviction for Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

Hudson, who is in custody, is scheduled to be sentenced by United States District Judge Anna J. Brown on March 12, 2007. Hudson faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.

The case was investigated by the Portland Police Bureau and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Thomas H. Edmonds and Amy E. Potter, at 503-727-1122. Further inquiries may be directed to Diane Peterson at 503-727-l066.
