3/27/2006 La Grande man sentenced to serve 15 years in prison PORTLAND, OREGON - Karin J. Immergut, the United States Attorney for the District of Oregon, announced today that GREGG LEON CRAMPTON, 39, of La Grande, Oregon, was sentenced to 180 months imprisonment followed by a five year term of supervised release. United States District Court Judge Michael R. Hogan reduced Mr. Crampton’s sentence by 9 months for time he had already served in state custody.
On May 14, 2003, in Union County, Oregon, Mr. Crampton eluded the La Grande and Oregon State Police when they attempted to arrest him on a warrant for violating his probation. The Oregon State Police eventually located the vehicle Mr. Crampton had been driving and had abandoned. Found inside were numerous rounds of .357 ammunition. A female passenger who had been inside the vehicle said Mr. Crampton had a gun.
On May 16, 2003, Mr. Crampton was arrested in Prineville, Crook County, Oregon, by Prineville and Oregon State Police in possession of a syringe containing methamphetamine, and 16 rounds of .357 ammunition. When arrested, Mr. Crampton told police he had lost the gun.
On November 1, 2005, Mr. Crampton pleaded guilty to two counts of being a felon in possession of ammunition. According to Assistant United States Attorney Frank R. Papagni, Jr., because Mr. Crampton’s previous criminal history included several drug trafficking convictions and illegal possession of a short-barreled shotgun, his possession of ammunition classified him as an armed career criminal. Under federal law, this mandated the minimum 15-year sentence.
Mr. Gary Williams, District Attorney for Crook County, and Mr. Martin J. Birnbaum, District Attorney for Union County, referred this investigation to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
